A liposuction of the neck and jowls is a relatively simple aesthetic surgery procedure that can produce results similar to those achieved with a facelift at a lower cost. It’s an effective way to get rid of excess fat and skin around the chin, jaw line and neck with minimal risk, and is one of the most common liposuction procedures performed. It may be done as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with a facelift.
Fat in the neck and jowls is usually related to obesity, but can occur in people of normal weight, as well. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and tends to sag. Jowls, in particular, are affected by the aging process, especially after the age of 50. A loss of mandibular definition and volume frequently accompanies drooping jowls.
Candidates for a neck and jowl liposuction will have excess fat in these areas, with good skin elasticity. Those who are not candidates for a traditional facelift due to medical or lifestyle factors (e.g. diabetes, smoking) may benefit from liposuction due to the lower risks involved. The patient will be given local anesthesia, and the whole procedure is completed in less than an hour.
Recovery is quick usually within three days and complications are rare. A risk of infection accompanies any surgical procedure, but fewer than one in 100 patients will experience this. Other possible side effects include bruising, swelling and scarring. Results are immediate and long lasting; you’ll appear younger and slimmer right away with a contoured, sculpted chin and better defined jaw line.
