A foreign object in the ear can result in pain, infection and hearing loss. While adults will typically realize when something is stuck in the ear, children may just notice ear pain and cry or be cranky.

When To Seek Emergency Care

You should seek medical assistance immediately if you experience severe pain, drainage or bleeding. You should also seek help if the object is a battery.

Removing the Object at Home

You may be able to remove the object at home using tweezers if it is easy to grasp, or by flushing the ear canal with water or using alcohol to remove an insect.

Always avoid poking the object or using liquid if there are ear tubes or if you suspect a hole in the eardrum.

When To See a Doctor

If the object cannot be easily removed or you have tried more than once, stop and see a medical professional. Delays and failed attempts to remove an object from the ear may result in infection and damage.
